Question:
How zero-fat is a zero-fat liver shrinking diet?

I am due to have a gallbladder removal as a 31stone, 31 yr old man in 3 weeks. My surgeon has put me on a zero-fat diet to shrink my liver pre-surgery - the same as he puts for gastric banding patients. How zero fat is zero fat - less than 5g a day, less than 2g a day? - even veggies have fat in them, so zero zero means total abstinence/liquid foods only    — BigBilly (posted on February 13, 2008)

Vegetables don't have fat in them. They have carbohydrates in them, which cause us to make fat. Liquids can have fat in them too, such as whole milk. I suggest you contact your doctor to ask what you should be doing. You should have a nutritionist on board for support as well.

I am on my pre-op diet for LapBand and I can only drink liquids on my diet. No actual solid food. I drink Carnation Instant Breakfast with 1% or skim milk or the Unjury Shakes.

I noticed that a lot of people are doing liquid diets prior to surgery for shrinking the liver. It seems to be the fastest most effective way to lose fast...Good luck

Who told you there is FAT in VEGES???? As far as I know there is NO FAT in vegetables unless you add the fat to them. You need to speak to a nutritionist! Fat comes from animal products! not from veges or fruits!

Vegetable oil is not made from 'vegetables' it's made from oilseeds.. not exactly like squeezing oil from a greenbean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetable_oil This website can help you find vegetables that do not have fat http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/indepth.food/veggies/compare.veg.html I went to quite a few websites and they disagree with the one you posted. Thankfully there are some good fat free veggies out there :-)

Not all veggies have fat. You really ought to check with your doctor on this and try to get some kind of meal plan or guidelines... I would think that zero fat means zero fat and less than 2g is much closer to zero fat than less than 5g.
