well I am not quite 3 months out and mine just went from one extreme to the other. I had very loose stools everytime until recently. Now it hurts soo bad and bleeds when I go to the bathroom. I'm going to start some stool softeners if this keeps up.

I am 5 months out and my bm's go from good to liquid in a matter of days. I have no idea why they do this, but I as well would like some insight.

I am 22 months post op and have never had a solid bowel movement. I also have a hiatal hernia (which I never had before). I just chalk the problems up to having my guts rerouted. Not happy about it -- makes eating out a challenge because of urgent trips to the bathroom.

2-1/2+ out. At first my BM were small and hard, primarily due to the fact that I literally ate like a bird, and most of that was protein which does not create much waste. I immediately started adding 2 teaspoons of Benefiber to my water bottle (each and every water bottle) that I had throughout the day. In a few days the "hard" phase disappeared. I have never had what I would consider my "old normal" BM, but what I have is a normal for my new body. Do remember that things have been re-routed and therefore your body will make adjustments. Get into the habit of using Benefiber, Metamucil or something like that daily (FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE). We don't eat as much as "normal" stomachs and therefore our bowels are different. I sometime have a very very large BM, but I do not have it very often. I accept that and my life is fine, but I "DO" need to keep something going to make things "move smoothly". This is something that most of us should have been doing when we had our normal stomachs anyway -- eating high fiber. Good luck to y'all. Missy

Thank You Jennie for your unbiesed opinion......... "rolls eyes" to answer the question... I am 5 years post op... and your stools will be a lil softer after surgery once your body levels out and finds its Norm......but I find that if I stick to protein and my water and stay away from the milk products...sugar substitutes and things High in fat my bowels are normal......You just have to find out what things you can and can not consume.... you have to re learn what your body will and will not except... It will get better I promise....

I still have to take stool softeners, or my stools are too hard and i get very painfully constipated. *sigh* I am a year out.

My stools can be quite large when I finally do go. Since we only go every 3 or 4 days, it piles up in there and I have had them big and cause me to bleed a little. I would try stool softners because they are easy on you. Hugs!

i had the same problem. I even ended up in the emergency room. My dr. prescribed Mycolax and it is wonderful. None of the over the counter methods helped me including regular usage of enemas(the BIGGEST NONO!!)
