Question:
Has anyone gotten surgery with a pre-op BMI less than 40 and no co-morbs?

I am being told repeatedly by different doctors that I am not heavy enough to qualify. I have a BMI of 38.7 and no comorbs. This feels like a double kick in the pants because not only am I not heavy enough (in their eyes anyway) but with no other health issues the ins co will think this surgery is for cosmetic reasons only? I have Bc/BS Insurance now in case that makes any difference.    — Kimberly H. (posted on March 6, 2001)

The first thing I would do is check your benefits and see if its covered and if so under what circumstances. Good luck. Dawn

The reason they are telling you this is because of the NIH guidelines. If you have comorbids then your BMI must be over 35. If you have none, your BMI must be over 40 to be proven as medically necessary. Are you sure you have nothing that could be considered co-morbid - aches & pains, reflux, stress incontinence??

I had a bmi of 39 something, and I wore jeans, a leather vest, and 4 rolls of nickles in my pockets to put me over the 40 bmi, it worked.
