Ketosis is the very bad breath you get post-op, it's the effect of losing a lot of weight fairly fast, your mouth acts as a chimney for the fat being burned. I hear eventually you get over it.

It's not necessarily good or bad but it's a safe thing done properly and with your surgeon's approval. First let me say follow YOUR surgeon's post-op plan which may or may not use ketosis to any degreee, but it is what he/she has found works for their patients. <p>Ketosis is the process of burning fat for energy and not protein. An eating plan that uses max ketosis is devoid of carbs. This allows you to eat much less protein and starvation mode is no longer a worry, nor is attacking your muscle and protein stores a concern. This is typically used in a plan that is all food and does not use protein drinks. At first it is impossible to eat enough food to get in 60 grams of protein spo the process of ketosis will keep your body safe. When no carbs are present for the body to use as energy then it goes after the fat instead of the protein. Therefore the small amount of protein one can eat in the earlier stages is okay and one doesn't have to worry about muscle being eaten up by our bodies. <p>My surgeon's plan is like this for the first 6 weeks. Then they allow very small amounts of veggies and fruit which still likely keeps you in ketosis but not as severe and you may float in and out. However, their feeling is the further out you get the more you are able to increase your food protein eventually reaching that point where you are able to get in adequate protein and eat some carbs and therefore no longer need ketosis to keep your body safe. <p>I choose to stay in max ketosis for 4-1/2 months with my surgeon's approval. It was burning fat off my body very quickly and I was happy with the results so I was willing to stay carbless or as close as possible, in order to get maximum results. However, it isn't for everybody. The only thing I was told when we discussed staying in max ketosis is that it was critical I get in my fluids to flush the ketones out of my body. Ketosis is safe done properly. But it is critical your surgeon be doing blood work at min. 3 month intervals to watch protein levels as it can cause gout and other health issues if not done properly and watched. Make sure your surgeon always knows what you are doing!
