Question:
What is the blood test called that checks your levels of vitamins, minerals,
etc.? My primary doctor keeps ordering a CBC, I looked at those results and it does not list what I am looking for. I am going to see him on Thursday and would like to have the name of this test. Thanks all!! — Donna S. (posted on May 21, 2002)

the doctor can tell a lot of things from the CBC, the red blood cells need
specific nutrients to survive, the shape, size, amount of cells can help
the doctor determine if you are deficient in many of your vitamins. There
are also specific tests that measure your blood level of iron, B12, folate,
along with many others. A lot of doctors do a CBC to see if there are any
problems there then they will order other tests if indicated.

I think my doctor orders a metabolic panel (I think this checks those
things) and checks b12 and cbc. I think.

A CBC is a <b>C</b>omplete <b>B</b>lood
<b>C</b>ount. It should check for everything, maybe your doc
just isn't requesting those results?

My surgeon orders the following tests every 3 months: blood sugar, kidney
function, calcium, electrolytes, liver function test, CBC, TSH, T3 &
T4, iron levels, B-12, folate and thiamine. It takes 4 vials of blood to
get all of these but seems very complete.

Hi, i am a lab tech, maybe I can answer some of this. A CBC is checking
the components of your blood, the red cells, the white cells and the
platelets. Your plasma or serum, the fluid your red and white cells float
in carries markers for everything else. You would have to be checked
individually for vitamin levels, those are not standard tests. Most
chemistry panels check liver function, kidney function etc
