Question:
Elevated Liver Enzymes

I was diagnosed 10-years ago with Hepatitis C, after doing a liver biopsy, I was told it was 'inactive'. My liver enzymes have been fairly normal as of October of 2001 but going in for pre-op blood work, they were found to be slightly elevated. I have a tentative surgery date scheduled for April 9th, 2002 and I too am afraid this could delay my surgery. I need my health back. I did a liver / gall bladder scan this morning but results won't be back until next week. Has anyone else experienced this?    — Lisa J. (posted on February 15, 2002)

I, TOO HAVE HEPATITIS C. I FOUND OUT ONLY 3 YEARS AGO. I HAD MY SURGERY IN DECEMBER 2001 AND THEY DID A BIOPSY THEN. MY LIVER ENZYMES WERE ELEVATED TREMENDOUSLY BUT THAT DID NOT STOP MY SURGERY. I WAS COMPLETELY HONEST WITH MY DOCTOR BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID. NO NEED TO WORRY. YOU WILL DO JUST FINE. I HAVE LOST 65 POUNDS IN 8 WEEKS. THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE FOR ME. GOOD LUCK...

I have a very good friend who has hepatits C. When he was diagnosed, he was told he would have to lose 100 pounds before they would even consider putting him on a transplant list. I'd think the surgery would be approved unless your liver enzymes are WAY out of line.

While I do not have hepatitis, my liver enzymes were extremely high going into surgery (something like 3 times normal). Obesity can create high levels. In my case, the levels began to lower at 3 months, and over the last 18 months have returned to normal. -Kate-
