Question:
Why did I have this surgery? Someone remind me please.

I am feeling really down about this whole thing. My whole life is different now. I haven't lost anything in 2 weeks now...maybe 1 pound. I can't get my bowel movements normal. I have to go back to work next week and I feel like I'm not an any type of schedule at all. Any suggestions?    — Janice P. (posted on February 8, 2002)

Hi Janice, Your question really touched me and took me back a year. We all go thru PO depression and asking why. But hang in there, You have already lost, and plateaus are a normal part of this process. As the next few weeks and months go by you are going to regain energy, start feeling better, receive many compliments, as well as get "back to normal". Normal may never be what it was as far a bm's ect. But this is a new life now. And a better one. It is so hard to see from your end right now, but believe me I started at 376, am now 216 1 yr PO. My life is so different. I cannot begim to tell you how much better it is. I am not the same as i was a year ago, not just weight, but mentally. I wish I could give you a glimpse of your new life that you will have soon, but try to have faith, I believe that this surgery is a gift from God, and if we trust in Him we will succeed and become what we want to be. Good Luck.

I felt HORRIBLE for about 3 months following the surgery. I couldn't keep anything down, and my energy level was zero. I dumped easily and felt odd in restaurants. Bottom line? I'm a year post-op now, down 160 lbs., and SO HAPPY I hung in there. It does get better, and your bowel habits, etc. will improve. Also, you'll be able to eat more and feel better SOON. Give this surgery 4 months before you say you wonder why you did it.

I know how you feel,I asked myself this same question many times. It took me forever (7wks) to finally feel like going back to work. I am now 13 wks post op and feel much better. My bowels are still irregular and I must be close to a bathroom when needed (I attribute this to gallbladder removal). It does get better. I have lost 80 lbs and feel better. Do you exercise? This really helps get you energized. Also sometimes if you increase you calories & protein you will break the plateu. Good Luck!

Janice, Your doing great you lost 22lbs in 3 weeks, that is 4 5lb bags of sugar and 2lbs of butter off your body.. I am 4 weeks post op and have lost 27lbs. I had a week when 2lbs came off and then the next week nothing. We are "lightweights" and it's going to come off slower. I still fell tired all the time and when I go out I am exhausted. Hang in there we are still healing and it's going to take time for our bodies to completly heal. Just think this summer you will look soooo good in that bathing suit and shorts. Keep your spirits up and it you want to chat email me. [email protected]

Hang, in there! It takes some of us a while to adjust to the physical and emotional changes after surgery. I went through a bit of a post-op depression. It lasted 3-4 months. I was losing weight like crazy but I remember that "I didn't feel like myself" and I worried because I had no appetite for months. I had to force myself to eat.
