Just Say NO (to Grazing)

Sep 23, 2010

I've been focusing lately on emotional eating and grazing.  For me, grazing is nothing more than emotional eating.  It is that instant shot of sugar, just like someone with a drug addiction.  I'm getting back into the habit of grazing for the past couple of days.  The difference now is that I am very aware of it and doing something about it.  Before, it would have taken me days, weeks or longer to become aware.

I was going through my computer and was reading some of the previous articles and blog posts I've written.  This one helped me a lot so I wanted to share here and another one on my blog.  Here's the one on grazing.  I don't know about you but I'm thinking of a cow grazing on a pasture when I read this!

If you are grazing, the great news is that it can be stopped.  It is a habit.  It is a choice.  Grazing…Just Say NO!  Grazing is a habit that can be stopped.  Grazing is not a requirement for your health; actually, to the contrary.  To continue your healthy lifestyle and maintain your weight, you need to view grazing as black/white; yes/no; do/don’t – I don’t Graze!

In order to stop a habit, you must replace it with a positive, healthy habit.  Some “How To” strategies for you to consider and incorporate into your successful WLS lifestyle:

→       Compile a list of “Things to Do Instead of Grazing”.  Items on your list might include reading a book, e-mail or call a friend, reach out for support (or give support) by posting on ObesityHelp.com, take a walk, or journal your thoughts.  Make your own list and review it when the desire to graze hits you.

→       Remind yourself “This too will pass” regarding the desire to graze.

→       Are you thirsty?  Drink water or your favorite form of hydration.  Many times drinking will squelch the desire to graze plus it can also give you a moment of pause in order to overcome the impulse to graze.

→       Remove yourself from the situation or environment.  If you are in the kitchen, go in another room; if you are in the break room at work, go outside for your break; sitting in front of the television, take a bubble bath.

→       Focus on how good it feels to be free from the compulsive eating activity of grazing.  It feels better to overcome the desire to graze rather than feel the guilt from grazing.

Just remember, grazing is for livestock, more specifically, cattle on a pasture.  Grazing is not part of our success for our healthy WLS lifestyle.  Just say NO and say YES to YOU!!
