Growing my own veggies!

Jul 28, 2010

We planted some vegetables a couple of months ago.  I wasn't sure of my sons' interest or level of involvement so we stuck our toes (so to speak) into gardening.  Rather than plant an area in our yard, we put together a container garden.  We started out with tomato plants, zucchini, jalapeno and bell peppers.  My husband and I love fruits and vegetables along with my older son but my younger son could exist on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and pizza.  Thankfully, neither of them are overweight but my younger son turns his nose up at any vegetables.

My thinking with this is that if he helped in growing our new garden that he would be more apt to eat them.  He loves to cook with me.  I made a broccoli dish and he helped with it.  Much to my amazement, he ate a pretty big serving of it.  From the broccoli dish to eating vegetables from our garden, my hopes were that he would develop a taste for fresh produce.

So far, so good.  Both boys have been very into taking care of the plants, watering them and especially harvesting them.  We're taking it to a new level.  When it gets cooler, we're going to use a small area in our yard and plant some more vegetables.

Bottom line here is that I don't want my sons to grow up fighting being overweight.  So far, they haven't.  They are perfect weight for their age and height.  I want to be proactive and take every step that I can towards their health today but for the future.  As an adult, I had to learn to like (and crave) fruits and vegetables. I hope I can share a desire for fruits and vegetables, and a love of exercise, moving so they can be strong, healthy adults.
