trader joe's shopping list for bandsters

Dec 08, 2009

Hi all. So I'm 10 days out from my Realize band surgery, which means it's time to start really getting real. Wanted to ask if anyone who's not a great cook has a great post-op shopping list that they've worked off of? I've done a ton of research and have obviously found many online, but I'm looking for a recommendation from someone who's as unskilled a cook as I am. Thanks!

Do you have a Trader Joe's near you? Jennifer

Yep - haven't been there before, but looks from this board like it's worth the trip.

I can't cook worth crap but here's what I would get from TJ's:

Chicken chili (in the can with soups)
Lentil soup
quinoa (all you have to do is rinse this and boil-easy directions on package-can be eaten in place of rice)
mild cheddar cheese sticks
turkey breast sliced (I wrap this around the cheese stick and dip in salsa)
hummus & carrots (this may be a slider food...beware)
edamame (either fresh or frozen)
turkey meatballs (in freezer section)
any frozen fish or shrimp (I'm with Andrea on this...try Sam's or Costco because they are usually individually wrapped)
greek yogurt (nonfat)
Pure protein shakes (in can near protein powders- 35 g of protein)
Protein powder if you're making shakes
cottage cheese
Laughing cow cheese wedges
light string cheese
sweet potatoes chopped into small chunks-in veggie section (a few steamed in ziploc steamer bags with splenda and cinnamon = YUM!)
sliced apples (i put peanut butter on these and it's easy to not eat skins)

For regular store:

If you are coffee drinker, try international foods, sugar free, decaf coffee (several flavors)
sugar free hot chocolate-swiss miss
Gorton's fish fillets
ground turkey (either patties or regular)
Lean Cuisines (watch the sodium with frozen dinners but they are usually a good portion size prior to restriction)

If you can eat potatoes ( some people can't), I brown some ground turkey, add in canned potatoes and a few laughing cow wedges and simmer until everything's melted and you've got a yummy casserole.

You may also want to check out the Hungry Girl website - she's got great ideas! Hope this helps!

One thing I did was go to Sam's club and hit the frozen fish.  You can get bags with individually packaged, pre seasoned fisk like salmon.  You simply defrost them and put them in the oven for 15 minutes and you have a perfectly seasoned and cooked protien for your dinner.  They have a parmesan crusted Tilaipa that is really good.
