I don't think anyone should be citing any of Kelly's "polls" as if they are scientific evidence ... They are not worth the thread they are posted in as evidence of anything pertaining to RNY and absorption or malabsorption of vitamin D!!!

And quite honestly, NOBODY on here should be advising anyone to take vitamins that are outside of the standards posted by the ASMBS. Even if someone has a medical qualification - they do NOT have anyone's medical history - medicine 101!!!!!!!

By all means post your own anecdotes, and state them as such but don't be presenting them as science for goodness sake! Very dangerous practice ...

They told you what they prescribed was the standard course of action, which is true.  But it does not work for most people.  If you ask them what their patients' average vitamin D level is, and if they tell you, you'll see it will be far below 80 if that is what they recommend patients take.

Did you ask them if there would be any harm to you if you chose to use dry D3 instead of D2 in oil?

They did not prescribe D3, by the way.  They prescribed D2.  D3 is not available by prescription.

I am not comfortable telling someone not to follow their doctor's advice.  I will suggest you look up what the Vitamin D Council and the Linus Pauling Institute say about D2 vs D3 and discuss your research with your doctor and dietician.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Thanks Kelley....I did talk to th e nutritionist, who essentially said "This is the standard". ..not much help.  I think I'll make one more run at another nutritionist in the practice and see if I can dry D3, since there seems to be evidence that it works better for RNY patients.   If she nixes it, I'll stick with the Rx but ask for labs sooner than 16 weeks to reevaluate.

On D2 vs. D3....yep, I confused the two.  Think I've got it straight now.
