I became a grandmother at 39 too! I figured I'd just cut to the chase and be GRANNY like on Beverly Hillbillies. I mean what the heck, I'm a granny! I'm so glad… my grandchildren are complete trips.

My first grandchild (who is now 14 1/2 years old) called me Ganny (Granny). So that's me, Granny! I embraced it. I love it. So when my second grandchild came along (she's now 11 years old), Granny it is.

I called my father's mother Nana (she was a glamourpuss and didn't like to be called Grandma because it made her feel old). I called my maternal grandmother Grandma. Loved them both dearly and miss them so much!

Are you expecting your first grandchild?

It doesn't matter what they call us, we will come running with cookies and tons of love.  We had our first one just before Christmas, a little boy.  LOVE HIM!  And it's so strange to see your baby holding a baby.  Congrats on your little ones!

My grand kids call me grandma, which is fine except with all the blended families around they have about 10 grandmas each.  Think they any woman over 40 is their grandma.  One of my grandkids was talking about grandma and her mother asked which one and she said "grandma with all the dogs and one cat".

After six years of infertility treatments, my husband and I got lucky and conceived. When our daughter was born, she was the first baby in our family in over 25 years! It was a BIG deal!

I put the question to my parents... what did they want us to refer to them as, given we live far from them, we'd talk about them to our daughter frequently. What names did they want?

Mom vehemently rejected "Nanny" (she said it reminded her of a goat!), and she didn't want "Grandma" either. She settled on Nana. My dad opted for Poppy.

On my husband's side, the grandchildren who came along prior to the birth of our daughter already decided that for us... Nanny and Grampy they are. By using different names for all the grandparents, my daughter immediately knows whom we are referring to when we speak about them.

Good luck in your choice! I like Nana personally... it's sweet.
