Hi Tara (using my best 12-step voice - lol!)....I am also a recovering Diet Coke drinker...Diet Cherry Coke that is.  Totally addictive and coming off it was worse than coming off sugar, swear to god.

After about 6 months post-op I tried some diet soda again and you know what?  Tastes good in the mouth but feels LOUSY in the tummy!  Just not worth it anymore, seriously.

Edited to add:  and by the way, it causes HORRIBLE acid for me now too.  It probably did pre-op but there was always too much food in my stomach to actually notice :-)

Your profile doesn't say which form of WLS you're planning, or when. Some people can drink soda after surgery, some can't tolerate it. Pre-op, I was drinking 2-3 liters of the stuff a day, and now I don't even like it much. I occasionally drink it when I eat away from home, if I know the place serves bad iced tea, but even at 10+ years post-op I'm pretty uncomfortable if I drink much of it.

I had RNY four weeks ago today! :DD.  I doubt too much exciting will happen if I had one, but when I signed up for this surgery, I agreed to follow the rules to the best of my ability. One of the rules was no soda. I got fat doing it my way, now I am doing it someone else's way.

I have mainly been drinking water, but do have a powerade zero once in a while. I actually like the water now, but nothing can replace the ice cold burn of a Diet Coke!!!

I am well aware that soda is full of chemicals, just like smokers know there are risks, just like alcohol drinkers know there are risks. doesn't change the fact that I WANT one. :D  Funny thing us humans, we even like the stuff that's bad for us. :(

Hi Tara! I'm a recovering addict to Mr Pibb and Dr Pepper.  I detoxed from the caffeine and carbonation the day before my surgery so my headache would coincide with my surgery pain! LOL

I've taking a tiny sip once in a while from hubby's drink, tried a Diet Root Beer the other day.  For me, the craving is still there once in a while for the glorious flavor and carbonation burst I got from drinking it straight... but when I take a sip, it just doesn't do it for me any more.  More than a swallow or two makes my pouch ache as well.

Hand in there!

I was a diet coke addict as well. I drank so much of it I ruined the size of my pouch and have regained all my weiht. So I can tell you first hand it is not worth it. I also developed a toxic level of aspartame in my blood.... basically poisening myself. I have been a water only girl for 2 years now and now I absolutly love water. Hang in there you can do it!

How did diet coke ruin the size of your pouch?  You realize that the pouch is open on both ends. It runs through the pouch it doesn't get stored up in the pouch. If your pouch was stretched at some point.  It was because of the foods you were eating.

Drinking diet (or regular) soda has NO impact on your pouch size.  Or the size of your stoma. Zero.

It may make you a little uncomfortable due to the carbonation, but even that's not a given.

Pouches stretch for many reasons.  If you drink soda with your food, yes, your pouch may stretch.  But it's because you are drinking with your meals - it doesn't matter what your choice of liquid is.

I'm 5+ years out.  I stayed away from the D****il I was about 9 months out.  I drink it every day again now.  It may not be the best choice in the world but it works for me.  I had a 40lb regain.  But it had nothing at all to do with what I was drinking (no amount of zero calories  add up to the approx 3500 calories used to gain a pound).

As of today, my regain is officialy back off.  I'm almost afraid to say that - don't want to jink myself.  My surgery made it much easier, even this far out, to re-lose the weight.  It took awhile, but all I had to do was go back to basics.  No diet pills, no 5day pouch test, no "diet".

Lots of Diet Coke though. ;)
